Day 1

Querétaro – Bernal – Rio Escanela

The day begins with a trip to the magical town of Bernal where you will stop for breakfast to try the famous “gorditas” (corn dumplings with your choice of filling). Then climb to a lookout point on the Peña de Bernal which is the world’s third largest monolith. After a relatively easy hike 60m above the town the spectacular view of the surrounding valley rewards all your efforts. Soak up the sun and enjoy the view before heading back down to explore the charming town. Afterwards you will transfer to Escanela River were you will spend the night in quaint river side cabins. Overnight stay. (Meals: None)

Day 2

Rio Escanela – Puente de Dios & Tancama – Jalpan

Today you set out after breakfast on a morning hike to the “Puente de Dios” (a natural bridge over the Escanela River) and from there enjoy a 40 minute hike to the natural pools of water close to the stunning waterfalls of the Escanela River. After a refreshing dip in the cool mountain waters you will transfer to Jalpan to have lunch and enjoy the beautiful Mission. In the afternoon you will visit the archaeological site of Tancama to learn about the Pre hispanic cultures of the Sierra Gorda. Then you will return to Jalpan for your overnight stay in a beautiful colonial style hotel. This transfer will be done on mountain bikes, so be prepared for an exhilarating ride (approx 2 hrs)! Day 3

Jalpan – Xilitla

After a traditional breakfast, you will spend a magical day in Xilitla. Visit the eccentric mansion and abstract gardens which once belonged to Edward James. This surreal fusion between nature and concrete structures is so fascinating that artists such as Salvador Dali and Pablo Picasso visited this location for inspiration. You will also have some free time to relax and swim in the waterfalls and natural pools which are nearby or try the exciting zip-line in town. Tonight you will stay in a tepee camp in the middle of the jungle, but don’t worry, all the necessary services are available for a great comfortable and unique overnight stay. (Meals: Breakfast in the Hotel & box lunch)

Day 4

Xilitla – Sótano de las Golondrinas & Fransiscan Missions – Jalpan

Is there a better way to start the day than by admiring hundreds of swallows and parrots flying from a 376m natural pit while the sun rises over the mountains of the Huasteca? Each night, these tropical birds come to nest in this cave which is one of the deepest in the world. After this incredible experience you will have lunch near the cave and you will have some free time to explore the surroundings. After enjoying the beautiful nature of this region, the rest of the day is dedicated to cultural visits and the discovery of architectural marvels such as the Franciscan Missions of Landa de Matamoros and Tilaco. These Missions have beautifully artistic facades and are hidden gems in the Sierra Gorda. Continue to Jalpan for your overnight stay. (Meals: Breakfast in the Hotel)

Day 5

Jalpan – Ayutla – Chuveje – Querétaro

After a comfortable night in Jalpan’s colonial hotel, we will guide you to the junction of the Sierra Gorda’s two main rivers, the Santa Maria and the Ayutla. Here you will undertake the most extreme adventure of your tour. You will have the opportunity to challenge your fears by descending rapids with a riverboard or a tube! You will also have time to take advantage of the calm junction of these rivers and swim in the tranquility of the water celebrated for its exceptional color and beauty.After a short break to relax in this peaceful environment, we will guide you to the Chuveje Waterfall. Here, natural turquoise pools will be waiting for you after your invigorating hike. Finally, you will be driven back to Querétaro to conclude your Sierra Gorda adventure.
